Trees, Trees, Trees

TREES, TREES, TREES

Ever drive down a street in an older neighborhood where the trees from homes on both sides meet in the middle? I love the feeling I get in those neighborhoods! Why, because not only is it beautiful to see those stately old trees but it is so much cooler on hot summer days than newer areas of the Inland Empire.

If you don’t read The Press Enterprise, you missed a great article in Sunday’s paper on August 10th, written by real estate agent, Ben Rubalcava. Apparently, I’m not the only one who loves to see mature trees, turns out most people do. According to this article, planting a tree can give you one of the best returns on investment for your home improvement dollars. Better yet, as the tree grows, its value increases. Now that is hard to beat!

The Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers says that “a mature tree can often have an appraised value of $1,000 to $10,000.” So a tree in your yard can not only improve the value of your property it can improve your view. Plus it provides additional benefits while you live in your home and when it’s time to sell.

The Arbor Day Foundation cites the following effects of trees on property values:

1)     Landscaping can add about 10 to 20 percent more value to a property, especially if it includes some mature trees.

2)     A tree can add curb appeal. Considering your home is probably the biggest investment you’ll make it your lifetime, who doesn’t want their yard to look great? Curb appeal is important whether you plan to stay for years or list it soon.

3)     Well placed trees can also provide your home with privacy; screen it from a busy road or a noisy neighbor.

4)     Energy efficiency is another benefit of trees. Depending on how your house is situated on the property, trees can create shade that will help cool it during these hot Inland summers and reduce air conditioning costs. They can also create wind breaks to keep your home protected from winter winds, reducing heating costs.

5)     Remember your elementary science lessons? Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, so they are great for the environment!
